Live shows sabatical

The following statement has been issued by the band (that sounds really formal but wasn't supposed to be). This is to kind of explain why no shows have been forthcoming this year.

Having been 'at it' for nearly fifteen years (! - where did that go then???) the band have decided to take a break from live shows this year and spend a bit of time working on their own things.

Nic and Jay have been having fun in the studio over the past few weeks working on ideas for a new project, and Liz is concentrating on the more traditional side of things for a while.

Nic's also finding time - and headspace! - to design and make Celtic and Anglo-Saxon inspired ceramic sculpture and tiles for the first time since he and Liz started the band waaay back in 1994.

Huge thanks as ever for your continuing support, we really will miss seeing all of you at the festies and shows and to keep you going til we next meet... do make sure you pick up a copy of the new album 'Thirteen Fires' - it really is a stormer :o)

Rob Leighton of Radio Caroline

It is with great sadness and much disbelief, that we have to report the untimely death of a great supporter and fan of Bluehorses.

Rob Leighton, a presenter on Radio Caroline, Died on 17th January. The details and arrangements can be found on the Radio Caroline web site and a book of condolences is also available.

Rob was a great friend to the band and our thoughts are with his wife Sharon.

They’re back with their first album in 7 years and they ain’t taking no prisoners! Welsh Celtic Rockers, Bluehorses, have gone back to their roots and come up with a new album ‘Thirteen Fires’ that’s dripping with metallic riffs, double kick-drums and soaring violin.

Fronted by Irish/Welsh Gothess, Lizzie Prendergast, whose storming electric-violin, electric-Celtic-harp and vocals provide the Celtic flavour, the band have come out of the closet - and brought some skeletons with them!

Founder member, drummer and arranger Nic Waulker says “Over the last 15 years we’ve played numerous festivals in every country in the UK, Europe and Scandinavia, but compared to the stuff we’ve jammed in the privacy of Bluehorse Towers, we’ve always toned things down quite a bit. Thanks to the delights of YouTube, we’ve discovered there’s a massive Folk Metal scene going on in Europe and Scandinavia headed up by bands like Korpiklaani and In Extremo and it’s made us realise there’s now an awful lot of people around who want to hear the kind of music we’ve always really enjoyed playing.

With Thirteen Fires we’ve let our hair down and are just being ourselves. I think this new stuff actually sounds more like us than anything we’ve recorded in the past, because with the dearth of out and out rock festivals through the 90’s, we managed to keep playing a lot of festivals by working within the folky infrastructure By following that route we’ve been doing as many as 20 festivals across the UK and Europe in some years, but the downside was we couldn’t put out anything too heavy or we’d have cut down the number of them who’d entertain us.

Even then, once we did the live shows, we still caused plenty of protest from the Folk-Police… “ ‘eavy Metal at Trowbridge Festival???! I never heard nothin like it...” and (shrilly) “I had to run out of the marquee to protect my hearing...” blah blah.
But no more will we be restrained from producing the most storming Celtic-flavoured rock and roll music possible by old reactionaries and Luddites!

Jay made a huge contribution to creating the sound of the album, far more than any other band member in the past. With previous work it’s always tended to be me driving the process along with Lizzie. This time I mainly worked with Jay on the basic ideas and Lizzie came in after to add violin parts and together we put together the vocal melodies and choruses. That way we ended up with a collection of tracks with a far more out and out rock sound which I think will appeal to a much wider audience.

The guitars are a lot more prominent than on anything we’ve done before and it’s a pretty wild and heavy beast, while still keeping all the familiar elements that make Bluehorses music unique.

During the Summer festivals a couple of new tunes were aired; one of these that went down rather well with all who were there, was "Dance With Me".

New album update

There have been a number of inquiries about how the new album was progressing and when it would become a reality... Nic just dropped this note off at the stables ... but basically

all tracks for the album are now writ, demo'd up and recording underway!

so anyway ... transcribed below.

We're finally there with track selection (heard that before... ned) and all have been recorded in demo form. After much experimentation, market research and the usual jaffa cake, diamond white and red bull frenzies, we've taken a bit of a different approach to this album. Can't say too much yet, but we're all getting very excited as we hear it coming together.

We're sort of going back to the bands early sound in some ways - a bit more medieval influenced than of late - but with the advantage of ten years practise! The new stuff is also much more of a reflection of our own personal musical tastes - we're all serial headbangers at heart!

But don't be afraid.

... OK, be afraid, but don't be worried... it still sounds like us!! In fact it sounds more like us than ever before!!! It just took us a while to work out what we sound like. It's not easy this, when you have a combined band attention span of 3 minutes :o)

I've already put drums down for some of the toons and all the final recording should be complete in 3 or 4 weeks. Then all we gotta do is mix it, so about another 5 years... :o) Heheh, only joshing. A couple of months should do it.

You're gonna LOVE it.

Two new videos on YouTube

Those of you that have been to a show in the last couple of years will notice that we have several small video cameras working away. We take all the footage and compile it into memories. Every so often we get some thing that is worth sharing. This was the case at Farmer Phil's festival last year. A couple of complete songs from this festival in 2006 have been edited down and are available on YouTube.

For those of you that have not come across YouTube before, it is a site that specialises in "subscribers videos". kind of like Flickr or photobucket but for videos. Given the size of some of these video clips it is better viewed over a broadband connection, otherwise wait for the clip to almost completely load before pressing the play button.

There is currently a collection of Bluehorses videos on Youtube, from clips out of the live video to some tunes from Newt festival in 2005 and a number of behind the scenes clips. see here for the complete collection

January Newsletter

The January Newsletter has been sent out to all those who have registered on the main band web page to be kept up-to-date. We aim to publish one a month on average. If there is braking, important news - like this years gig list - then we will publish as soon as it is known, alternatively when there is nothing to report then we will not bother you.

If you did not receive it, and would like to do so in the future, or if you previously signed up but nothing has arrived in your in-box, please enter your mail address in the box (like that to the left) on the main band web page. If your address is already registered the program will let you know, otherwise you will be emailed a confirmation request for the owner of the mail account to accept. Sorry this is an involved process but it helps to stop the spammers, and gives you a chance to change your mind and un-subscribe.

You could just keep on checking out the web page every so often, but we think this is more reliable!

An alternative (magazine layout) version is also available on the newsletter blog. Both this blog and the newsletter one are enabled for RSS (Really Simple Syndication) - for a detailed explaination then try here at the BBC but basically if you have IE7 or Firefox then just click the funny orange button on the toolbar, and follow the wizard. Even simpler we have put a button to the right of this page to Feedburner.

Live Radio Caroline Set - 14th September 10pm

Up until the inception of the pirate radio station, later to be called Caroline, rock and pop music radio and tv was limited to a few carefully selected and highly unsubersive programmes, their output pretty much controlled by the major labels. When Caroline founder Ronan O'Rahilly couldn't get airplay for the bands he managed... he bought a ship and set up shop in international waters.

Despite continuous attempts by the government to put a stop to their 'dangerous' activities (and of course being keen to control any revenue), the station has kept going in one form or another ever since.

These days, although still maintaining their fiercely independent ideaology, the station broadcasts on the internet, Sky, satellite and cable, with the excellent recent announcement that Caroline is being relayed to the 100,000 listeners in the Baltic states from the powerful 945kHz medium wave transmitter of Radio Nord in Riga, Latvia.

Rob Leighton presents Imagination Radio via Carolines transmitters and has long been a good friend and supporter of Bluehorses. Rob asked us to record a live set for Imagination some time ago, and we finally got it together in August on the way home from the very rockin' Farmer Phil's Festival.

The show was recorded in Rob's beautiful 250 year old country cottage with an invited audience of friends and neighbours. The band played for about an hour, recording onto their mobile studio, really having a ball, making some new friends and availing themselves of the sumptuous buffet provided by the lovely Mrs Leighton!

Andy's Farmer Phils Festival Diary and Pics!

Deepest Shropshire was the venue for one of the bands favourite festivals yet. We're talking Glastonbury 1972 here!

Beautiful setting, lovely people - both festy crew and audience - rotating stage based on a cow-milking carousel and that Farmer Phil... He am THE MAN! Oh yes indeedy.

Engine Room Refit

As some of you may already know, Nathan has decided to call it a day and concentrate on fronting his own band project. We're very sad to see him go, as his inimitable thunderous playing style and stage persona have contributed a huge amount to the band over the past 4 years. We wish him all the best with his new band and family life with Fluffy and their new son Luke. Rock on Dood!!

The next few shows will see the return of our old pal Rob Khoo, BHs original bassist of 9 years, who's kindly agreed to help us out on a voluntary basis while we look for a permenent replacement. We know that many of you will look forward to saying hi to him again!

blinding headline set to an enthusiastic 1200 strong crowd under canvas at Saul
Festival.

The show was filmed and produced by a crack TV film crew and
sound recorded using 24-track digital technology. Directed by David Wheeler (Top
Gear, Bad Lads Army, SAS Jungle Borneo etc)

Bluehorses are a band to be taken very seriously, but their
sense of humour is pristine. With that essential mixture of darkness and light,
they have the perfect balance.

The atmosphere was electric and the spirit of the whole
weekend is captured here.

This DVD recording reveals the stunning light show, the
energy and, of course, the music from the festival stage and the enjoyment of
the crowd on that special summer's evening".
